From the Members
The Jewish Women of the Landings (JWOL) holds great significance for me. When my husband and I were considering relocating to the Savannah area, one of my main priorities was to ensure that I would have the opportunity to connect with other Jewish women. Forming these connections was an essential factor in our decision-making process, as finding a supportive and like-minded community was important to me.
I am truly grateful for the chance to engage and participate with fellow Jewish women through JWOL. This involvement has allowed me to learn more about the unique Jewish culture of Savannah, deepening my understanding and appreciation of the community. Additionally, my experiences with JWOL have led to the development of lifelong friendships, further enriching my life and sense of belonging.

JWOL was one of the reasons I moved to Savannah and has been one of my most favorite parts of living at The Landings.

I attended a JWOL Luncheon as a guest and was warmly welcomed by many women I already knew, and by those I just met. As the mission statement says, JWOL is “dedicated to the enhancement of Jewish life at The Landings”; I look forward to that.

In The Beginning ...

Officially, the "Jewish Women of the Landings is an organization of Jewish women, Jewishly connected women, or women who wish to participate in activities of a Jewish Nature, who live at the Landings or Skidaway Island.”
Unofficially, the Jewish Women of the Landings is much more.
In the Fall of 1998, the Jewish Federation of Savannah hosted a party at The Landings for the Jewish families who lived there. Those who were invited admitted they thought it would be a very small guest list, but the host's house quickly filled. Until then, no one realized there were so many Jewish people on the island. At the party, Marcia Durben approached Carollee Getz, one of the few guests she knew, and suggested that they start a social group of the Jewish women who live at the Landings. "We should all know each other," she said.
Since that party, this ever-growing group of women has learned together, dined together, traveled together, played together, read together, walked together, and laughed together. We are mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and sisters. We are professionals and volunteers. We are athletes and artists. We are friends.
And we take pride in JWOL; we created this organization, we nurture it, we chair its committees, we attend its events, and we look for ways to make it better.
